By Mark Labutis, Newark City Council member 4th ward -

During my campaign for Newark City Council, I spent a lot of time chatting with my neighbors on their front porches. On these porches, we would discuss the issues and I would get the privilege to see a glimpse of our great city through my neighbors’ eyes. Through these initial conversations, I learned that nearly everyone had a different viewpoint, according to their circumstance, about this city we all call home.

After completing my first month of service on City Council, this trend has remained constant: constituents see situations according to their individual circumstance. I’ve enjoyed hearing from my neighbors on various issues and helping them make the connection to the correct person or department to find solutions. From snow removal to noise ordinances, I’ve heard it all and learned that Newark has a great team in place to help all of our residents with their concerns.

I am exceptionally pleased that your Council has been able to help our downtown area by passing legislation that will help enforce our parking laws in that area. A significant amount of time and money has been poured into our downtown to make it more inviting and include more activities for all ages. This legislation should ease the parking issues and allow for more parking spaces to be available for shoppers to visit, patronize and enjoy our downtown area.

My first month on City Council has been rewarding.

I look forward to continuing to understand the needs of my city and my neighbors and will do my part to keep Newark a great place to live, work and worship.
